Thrillers and Chillers: The Devil Doll (1936).

The Devil Doll (1936). Directed by Tod Browning. Cast: A cross-dressing Lionel Barrymore and Maureen O'Sullivan. The movie was adapted from the novel Burn Witch Burn! (1936) by Abraham Merritt.

Paul Lavond, wrongly convicted of robbing his own bank more than seventeen years ago, escapes from Devil's Island with Marcel, an old scientist who is near death. Marcel wants to live with his wife Malita and a continue his work, while Paul wants revenge against the three partners who framed him for their crime. When Paul and Marcel reach Malita's home, Marcel and Malita conduct an experiment on Lachna, a young girl who works for Malita. The girl is hypnotized and shrunk to the size of a little doll. After Marcel dies, Malita still wants to continue with their work. Paul sees the doll as a way to get his revenge and they travel back to Paris. Paul disguises himself as Mme. Mandelip, an old woman who owns a toy shop and, captures others who are turned in to dolls. When he visits his mother, she tells him that, after his wife's death, his daughter Lorraine grew up poor and now works in a laundry. He goes on with his plan against his former partners. Will Lavond clear his name and win back his estranged daughter love?

I thought the film The Devil Doll, had a very interesting plot with a wonderful casting, of Maureen O'Sullivan and Frank Lawton. Lionel Barrymore is the star, and gives a wonderful performance, jumping between sympathetic and diabolical. The special effects are amazing.

Maureen O'Sullivan, best known as the jungle wife of Tarzan and mother of Mia Farrow was a classmate of Vivien Leigh. Her big movie break came when she met director Frank Borzage who was filming for Fox. In 1932 she signed with MGM and performed in nine movies at four studios. Irving Thalberg picked her to play Tarzan's Jane. She married Australian writer John Farrow, with whom she had seven children: Michael, Patrick, Maria (Mia Farrow), John, Prudence, Theresa (Tisa Farrow), and Stephanie Farrow. After her last Tarzan she asked for release from her contract to care for her husband who had just left the Navy with typhoid. She continued making occasional movies, television and stage appearances and operating a bridal consulting service.

Thrillers and Chillers: I Walked With a Zombie (1943).

Walked with a Zombie(1943). Directed by Jacques Tourneur. Cast: Frances Dee, Christine Gordon and Tom Conway. It was the second horror film from producer Val Lewton, the first was, Cat People. Lewton was given the film's title and with the help of the writers, he created the story around the title, in this case borrowing elements of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre.

Nurse Betsy Connella, tells her story in a narration how she "walked with a zombie.": Betsy is hired to care for Jessica Holland, the wife of Paul Holland, who is the owner of a sugar plantation on a Caribbean island.

That night at dinner, Betsy meets Paul’s half-brother Wesley Rand and they share a story about their mother, Mrs Rand. While getting ready for bed, Betsy hears a woman crying. She goes to see who's crying and ends up at the tower stairwell. There she sees Jessica Holland, who walks towards her like a ghost. Betsy screams for help, Paul tries to comfort her and takes Jessica back to her room.

The next morning, Betsy meets Jessica's physician, Dr. Maxwell, who tells her that Jessica sleepwalking, is caused by an incurable tropical fever.

Later, Betsy goes to town and runs into Wesley Rand, drinking himself into a stupor, while there, she hears a song about how Jessica had an affair with Wesley and was struck into a permanent state of shock. In the evening Betsy meets Mrs Rand, Wesley and Paul's mother, who is also a doctor. Back at the Fort, distant drums of a Voodoo ritual can be heard. Paul apologizes for bringing her to the island and blame's himself for his wife's condition. Betsy realizes that she is in love with Paul, in spite of his mood swings. She makes up her mind to make him happy by curing Jessica. Betsy takes Jessica on a nightmarish journey, to visit a Voodoo priest. Betsy is shocked to find who the priest really is. Will Jessica ever be cured?

A haunting, suspenseful, thriller. Loved the dash of 'Jane Eyre' and the West Indies setting. Tom Conway and Frances Dee are both very good. If you've never seen the film, I walked With a Zombie, I think you are in for a special treat!

Frances Dee, big break came when she was offered the lead opposite Maurice Chevalier in, Playboy of Paris. Later she performed in, An American Tragedy. She met actor Joel McCrea on the set of the film, The Silver Cord (1933). They married on October 20, 1933, after a whirlwind courtship, and remained married until McCrea's death in 1990.

Dee's other film credits included: June Moon, Little Women, Of Human Bondage, Becky Sharp, and Payment on Demand. She co-starred with McCrea in the film, Four Faces West (1948).

Thrillers and Chillers, Happy Birthday: Count Dracula.. I mean, Béla Lugosi !

Béla Lugosi (20 October 1882 – 16 August 1956) . Was best known for playing Count Dracula in the Broadway play and Film . Lugosi was approached in the summer of 1927 to star in a Broadway production of Dracula adapted by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston from Bram Stoker's novel.

The film: Dracula (1931). The story begins when, Renfield travels to Transylvania and is met at the castle by Dracula. Renfield soon passes out from drinking drugged wine, Dracula attacks him.  Dracula boards an England-bound ship, which also carries his coffin in which he sleeps during the day. When the ship docks in Whitby Harbor, the entire crew is found dead. Only Dracula and Renfield, who is scared out of his mind, survive. Renfield is taken to a sanitarium, where a doctor tries to figure out what is wrong with him.

One night at the opera, Dracula introduces himself to Dr. Seward and his daughter Mina, her fiance, John Harker, and friend Lucy who is later attacked and killed by Dracula .

Dracula takes advantage of his ability to transform himself into a bat to attack his next victim, Mina. She does not die immediately, but begins to change over several nights.

Van Helsing confirms for Seward and Harker that Dracula is a vampire when Dracula's reflection does not show in the mirror of a cigarette box. Even though Van Helsing, takes many precautions to prevent Dracula from getting into Mina's room. Dracula hypnotizes her maid to open the windows for him. After, Mina becomes a vampire, she tells Van Helsing that she has seen Lucy, which confirms his suspicions that she is the "woman in white" who has been attacking children. Will Van Helsing be able to find a way to resist Dracula and release Mina  from his spell?

Bela Lugosi, became a  legend after this movie, and his performance of Dracula introduce us to the vampires, we know and love today. ;)

Fun Facts:

Cinematographer Karl Freund achieved the effect of Dracula's hypnotic stare by aiming two pencil-spot-lights into actor Bela Lugosi's eyes.

The Royal Albert Hall sequence of the movie was filmed on the same stage where The Phantom of the Opera (1925) starring Lon Chaney had been filmed.

Among the other actors mentioned as possible candidates for the role of Count Dracula were John Wray, Paul Muni, Conrad Veidt, Chester Morris, and William Courtenay.

The spider webs in Dracula's castle were created by shooting rubber cement from a rotary gun.

There was no real musical soundtrack in the film because it was believed that, with sound being such a recent innovation in films, the audience would not accept hearing music in a scene if there was no explanation for it being there (e.g., the orchestra playing off camera when Dracula meets Mina at the theatre).

Bette Davis (who had a contract at Universal at the time) was considered to play the part of Mina Harker. However, Universal head Carl Laemmle Jr. didn't think too highly of her sex appeal.

In the scene where Dracula and Renfield are traveling to London by boat, the footage shown is borrowed from a Universal silent film called The Storm Breaker (1925).

In the first scene, the young woman reading from the tourist book was played by Carla Laemmle, niece of Carl Laemmle, founder and head of Universal Pictures.

When Bela Lugosi died in 1956, he was buried wearing the black silk cape he wore for this film.

Bela Lugosi never blinks even once throughout the film.

Thrillers and Chillers: The Devils Mask(1946).

The Devils Mask(1946).Cast: Anita Louise, Jim Bannon , Michael Duane, Mona Barrie, Barton Yarborough, Ludwig Donath, Paul E. Burns, Frank Wilcox , Thomas Jackson , Richard Hale.

When a plane headed for South America crashes, the police find five shrunken heads in the wreckage, one with red hair. Capt. Quinn of the San Francisco police department visits the local museum to find out if any of its collection is missing. There, Quinn meets up with private detectives Jack Packard and Doc Long. Quinn shows the shrunken head to curator Raymond Halliday, who asks taxidermist Leon Hartman to examine it.

Soon after, Mrs. Louise Mitchell, the wife of museum director Quentin Mitchell, who disappeared while on an expedition in South America. Tells the detectives that a man named Rex Kennedy has been following her and believes that he may be planning with her stepdaughter Janet to kill her.

That night Janet and Rex, visit Hartman and shares their belief that Louise is romantically involved with Arthur Logan. They also believe that they murdered her father. Louise introduces the detectives to Logan, who has come to show them slides of the expedition where Mitchell disappeared. As Logan shows the slides on the screen, an unseen person shoots a blow gun at him through the window. When the butler sees the fleeing person, he is killed by a dart from the gun. The daughter from inside the house also sees the killer... does she recognise him... could it be her father?

When you mix a blackmailing psychiatrist, a crazy taxidermist, a black panther, a few characters with shady reputations, you have a wonderful atmospheric little chiller that's very entertaining.

Anita Louise, was described as one of films most fashionable and stylish women. She was best known for her Hollywood society parties .

Anita Louise best known films: Madame Du Barry (1934), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), The Story of Louis Pasteur (1935), Anthony Adverse (1936), Marie Antoinette (1938), The Sisters (1938), and The Little Princess (1939).

By the 1940s, she performed in minor roles until television in the 1950s. She played one of her most widely seen roles in the CBS television series, My Friend Flicka from 1956–1957.

Thrillers and Chillers: Dial M for Murder (1954).

Dial M for Murder(1954). Is based on a successful stage play and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Cast: Ray Milland, Grace Kelly and Robert Cummings . The supporting cast includes: John Williams and Anthony Dawson .

Having seen the play on Broadway, Cary Grant really wanted to play the role of Tony Wendice, but studio chiefs did not feel the public would accept him as a man who arranges to have his wife murdered.

The story begins when, Tony Wendice a professional tennis player, now retired lives in a London with his wealthy wife, Margot. Who is having an affair with crime-fiction writer, Mark Halliday. Needing money, Tony comes up with what he thinks is the perfect plan to have Margot murdered.

When Mark shows up at the apartment, Margot introduces her "old friend" to Tony. After sending them off to see a play, Tony makes an excuse to stay behind so he can meet with, Swann.

Tony has been following Swann, one of his old college friends and has learned that he has become a small time crook. He uses the information to blackmail him into committing the murder. Tony shows Swann a love letter from Mark to his wife. After tricking Swann into leaving his fingerprints on the letter, Tony offers to pay him £1,000 to kill Margot. If he refuses, Tony will turn him in to the police for trying to blackmail his wife.

After Swann agrees, Tony tells him his plan: First, He will take Mark for the evening, leaving Margot alone at home. Next, he tells him where he will hide her key. Then Swann, is to sneak into the apartment after Margot goes to bed and hide behind the curtains and wait for Tony to telephone. That will be the signal for the plan to go into motion. Swann is to kill her and leave signs of a failed burglary, then exit through the front door, again hiding the key under the staircase carpet. Will Swann complete their perfect plan for murder?

Dial M for Murder, is one of my favorite films. It is a wonderfully fast paced film. The ending, is very entertaining.

After the success of Mogambo, Kelly starred in a TV play The Way of an Eagle, before being cast in the film, Dial M for Murder. Alfred Hitchcock was the director of the film and would become Kelly's mentor. Dial M for Murder, opened in theaters in May 1954, to both positive reviews and box-office triumph.

Video: The Uninvited (1944).

Thrillers and Chillers - THE UNINVITED (1944)

A brother and sister (Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey) move into an old seaside house they find abandoned for many years on the English coast. Their original enchantment with the house diminishes as they hear stories of the previous owners and meet their daughter (Gail Russell, now a young woman) who now lives as a neighbor with her grandfather. Also heard are unexplained sounds during the night. It becomes obvious that the house is haunted. The reasons for the haunting and how they relate to the daughter whom the brother is falling in love with, prove to be a complex mystery. As they are compelled to solve it, the supernatural activity at the house increases to a frightening level.

Solid ghost thriller that ranks right up there with The Innocents and The Haunting.

Facts and trivia:

The beautiful song "Stella By Starlight" was written specifically for this movie and is featured several times. In the movie Roderick Fitzgerald "writes" it for Stella Meredith.

Gail Russell co-stars with author Cornelia Otis Skinner who portrayed "Miss Holloway". That same year (1944), Gail Russell portrayed Cornelia Otis Skinner in "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay", a film based on the real-life memoirs of Miss Skinner.

Some of the interior sets of Windwood Manor, such as the main staircase and parlor, were re-dressed sets from the 1942 film I Married a Witch (1942).

Helen Walker and Veronica Lake were tested for the lead roles.

Thrillers and Chillers: Chandu the Magician (1932)

Chandu the Magician (1932) is a mystery film. Cast: Edmund Lowe, Frank Chandler and Bela Lugosi. Based on the radio play of the same name, written by Harry A. Earnshaw, Vera M. Oldham and R.R. Morgan. The radio series ran from 1932 to 1933 and Fox obtained the rights hoping the film would appeal to a ready-made audience. In 1934 Chandu returned in a twelve part serial, The Return of Chandu, only this time Bela Lugosi played Chandu.

Frank Chandler had learned all he could from the Yogis in India and has become a Chandu. He has the power to teleport, astral project, mesmerize, as well as project illusions. With these supernatural abilities and strength he is able conquer all evil that threatens mankind.

Evil Egyptian Roxor kidnaps Chandu's brother-in-law, Robert Regent, an inventor of the death ray that can cover half way round the world. Chandu must use what he learned from the yogis to rescue his family, whom Roxor has kidnapped in order to learn the secrets of the death ray.

Chandu's sweetheart Egyptian Princess Nadji also is kidnapped, leaving Chandu to struggle with who to rescue first. Will Chandu have the right knowledge to save them all from the evil clutches of Roxor?

I really enjoyed this film with its erie lighting effects which make the film come alive. Amazing hieroglyphics on the walls and keep an eye on the eyes of living statues.

Edmund Lowe's career included over 100 films . He is best remembered for his role in the movie, What a Price for Glory(1926). Making a smooth transition to talking pictures he remained popular until the mid 30's. He was no longer a major star although he occasionally performed with Jean Harlow, May West and Claudette Colbert. He also starred in the 1950s television show, Front Page Detective and played the elderly villain in the first episode of Maverick in 1957.

Thrillers and Chillers - REPULSION (1965)

Deneuve in 'Repulsion'

Catherine Deneuve stars as Carol Ledoux, a Belgian manicurist living with her sister, Helen (Yvonne Furneaux), in a London flat. Simultaneously attracted and repulsed by sex, Carol is a virgin who finds her sister's relationship with a married man, Michael (Ian Hendry), extremely disturbing. When her sister and Michael go on holiday, Carol begins to disintegrate mentally, hallucinating bizarre encounters, being forced into taking a sabbatical from her job and ultimately committing a pair of murders in her deranged state. Very creepy and disturbing film. Catherine Deneuve gives a terrific performance.

Thrillers and Chillers - THE INNOCENTS (1961)

Deborah Kerr, gave a perfect performance as a spinster governess who must fight for the souls of two orphan children. A classic thriller from 1961 that uses beautiful black and white cinematography. One of the best ghost films of all time.

FACTS TRIVIA:

To create such sharp visuals, director of photography Freddie Francis used lots of huge bright lamps.

Deborah Kerr sometimes had to resort to wearing sunglasses between takes.

Deborah Kerr always regarded this as her finest performance.

When the governess first arrives at the house, it's a bright, sunny day. In fact, Freddie Francis had had some of the trees painted lighter to exaggerate this.

At one point when Deborah Kerr's character wanders around the house at night with only a candelabra for illumination, you might think you see something in the corner of your eye. You do. It's the clapperboard which had briefly wandered into shot. Jack Clayton decided to keep it in because he liked the idea of something almost subliminal being present to add to the air of unease.

The film opens with a creepy song written by Paul Dehn and Georges Auric sung over a black screen for about 45 seconds before the 20th Century Fox logo appears. In some cinemas, the projectionists assumed this was a mistake on the print and edited the film so it began with the appearance of the Fox logo.

Happy Birthday: Charlton Heston!

Charlton Heston, was a bigger than life actor of film, theatre and television. Heston is best known for having played heroic roles, such as Moses in The Ten Commandments, Colonel George Taylor in Planet of the Apes, El Cid, and Judah Ben-Hur, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

My Charlton Heston Halloween movie pick is:

The Awakening (1980). British horror film. It was directed by Mike Newell. It is the third film version of Bram Stoker's 1903 novel The Jewel of Seven Stars, which had previously been adapted for television in 1970 as The Curse of the Mummy, followed by a theatrical adaptation in 1971, Blood from the Mummy's Tomb, released through Hammer Films. The film stars Charlton Heston, Susannah York, and Stephanie Zimbalist in an early acting role.

The film begins as archaeologist opens the tomb of an ancient Egyptian queen at the exact moment his daughter is born. Many years later, the girl, now a teenager, begins to have many frightening changes in personality. People begin to mysteriously die. Heston soon comes to believe that the spirit of a cruel queen, named Kara, possessed his daughter at the moment of her birth andplans to live through her body.

This film has some beautiful Egyptian location shots. If you like the mysteries of Egypt or mummy movies you may like this film. Yes, it is a little gory at times.

Star of the Month: Fredrick March.

Fredrick March was one of the few leading actors of his era not to sign long-term contracts with the studios, and was able pick and choose his roles, which helped him avoid being typecast.

My Fredrick March Halloween movie pick:

Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde (1932). Cast: Fredric March, Miriam Hopkins, Rose Hobart. Dir: Rouben Mamoulian. The film begins in London in the late eighteenth century. Physician Dr. Henry Jekyll shares with a group of scientists that he believes man lives with an eternal struggle between good and evil. Jekyll has developed a potion to separate the two sides.

Jekyll decides to ask Brigadier General Carew for permission to marry his daughter Muriel earlier than they had first planned, but Carew refuses. Disappointed, Jekyll returns to his laboratory and takes the potion, and now has turned into the evil personality. Jekyll visits Ivy Pierson, a music hall singer who he had rescued earlier from the advances of a man. As "Mr. Hyde," Jekyll tries to seduce Ivy. She wants nothing to do with him, but when he promises her wealth, she quickly changes her mind. Jealous of the feelings Ivy has for Dr. Jekyll, Hyde becomes violent. Later, when Jekyll realizes he has terrorized Ivy, he anonymously sends her money. She visits Jekyll, and begs him to save her from Hyde, and he promises her that she will never see him again. Unfortunately, on his way to the Carews, Jekyll turns into Hyde again without drinking any of the potion and strangles Ivy. Desperately, Jekyll trying to recover to his normal self, sends word to Dr. Lanyon, ordering him to get more of the potion to him. At midnight, Lanyon watches Hyde turn back into Jekyll, who swears him to secrecy. Jekyll then promises never to drink the potion again. Jekyll goes to Muriel to break off their engagement. While there he turns into Hyde and attacks Muriel, who is saved by Carew. The police chase Hyde back to Jekyll's lab. Will Dr. Jekyll ever be able to get control of the violent Mr. Hyde.

This film is worth watching for its amazing camera work alone. There's wonderful use of light and shadow, and the scenes showing the transformation of Jekyll to Hyde are filmed in what look to be uninterrupted shots. That reminds me a little of the evil twin of, Jerry Lewis. ;)

Fun Facts:

The first horror movie ever to win an Academy Award.

When discussing who to cast as Jekyll/Hyde, studio head Adolph Zukor first suggested Irving Pichel for the part. Director Rouben Mamoulian turned it down because he wanted an actor who could play both parts convincingly and felt Pichel could only play Hyde. 'Phillips Holmes' was considered and turned down for the opposite reason: he would have been a good Jekyll but a poor Hyde. Mamoulian then suggested Fredric March. Zukor felt that this was a bad choice because, up till then, March had been featured in lightweight roles. In addition to winning March the first of his two Oscars, Jekyll/Hyde was the part that finally led to Hollywood taking him seriously in more demanding roles.

Rose Hobart's father performed as a cellist in the New York Symphony. She began her career on stage. One of her best-known roles was as Grazia, in the American stage production of , Death Takes a Holiday(1929).

Her first film role was the part of Julie in the first talking picture version of Ferenc Molnar's, Liliom(1930), made by Fox Film, starring Charles Farrell in the title role, and directed by Frank Borzage. She co-starred with Fredric March and Miriam Hopkins in Rouben Mamoulian's original film version of, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931). She played the role of Muriel, Jekyll's fiancee.

Hobart often played the "other woman" like in her last major film performance, Bride of Vengeance(1949).

In the 1960s she performed on the television show, Peyton Place.

Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen, received an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Sand Pebbles. His other popular films include The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, Bullitt, The Getaway, Papillon, and The Towering Inferno. The Blob(1958), is an independently made American horror/science-fiction film. It was not until Steve McQueen became famous with the TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive that the film became a hit at the drive-in theatres. Today, the film is recognized as one of the quintessential 1950s American sci-fi/horror films.

The film the "Blob", was Steve McQueen's debut performance. The film's theme song, "Beware of the "Blob" (recorded by studio group the Five Blobs—actually singer Bernie Nee overdubbing himself, was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David and was a nationwide hit in the U.S.

Steve Andrews and his girlfriend Jane Martin are out late at night watching falling stars. When they see a meteor hit the ground. They drive out to try to find where the meteor landed. An old man finds the meteor first and pokes it with a stick. The rock opens where there is a small jelly-like blob inside. The blob, still alive, crawls up the stick and attaches to his hand. Panicked, the man runs onto the road, where he is seen by Steve, who takes him to see Dr. Hallen.

While Dr. Hallen helps the injured man he sends Steve back to the crash site to find out more information. The blob completely consumes the old man, the nurse and the doctor, getting bigger all the time.

Steve and Jane go to the local police and return to the clinic with Lt. Dave and Sgt. Burt, where they find no sign of the creature or the doctor. The police do not believe Steve's story. Steve and Jane are sent home with their fathers, but sneak out and locate all their friends, to ask them to help warn the town.

In the meantime, the blob has killed a mechanic, the janitor and a bar room of late-night drinkers. Steve and Jane find the blob in the grocery store and hide in the walk-in refrigerator. The blob starts to come in under the door but then retreats. Steve and Jane escape and set off the town's fire alarms. The whole town gathers and demands to know what is going on. The people in the theater run screaming running for their lives alerting the town to where the blob is. Jane's little brother confronts the blob with his cap gun. Jane and Steve run in the diner after him but become trapped along with the owner and a waitress. How will they escape with their lives?

I thought the special effects were cheesy fun, as is the story.
